Brain Resilience After Trauma Exposure

Maltreatment during childhood produces differences across multiple circuits in the developing brain, but which affected circuits are involved in psychopathology is unclear. Identifying them is necessary to develop interventions that target specific neurobiological systems. This project used machine learning (computer-based methods that derive meaningful models from empirical data) to determine those circuits.

S.T.A.R.T.L.E.: Strategic Translational Anxiety Research To Leverage Exposure

Anxiety disorders affect roughly one in five adults, and most evidence-based treatments use exposure: repeated presentation of a feared stimulus without the feared outcome. Not everyone responds equally. This study tested whether a behavioral prime can facilitate inhibitory learning, a proposed critical component of exposure therapy, with the goal of improving exposure outcomes.

Mobile Assessment After Trauma

We know far less about symptoms on the first and second days after a trauma than during the first months. Using mobile applications that deliver brief, regular assessments during the acute period, this study identified initial post-trauma symptoms to help tailor early treatment.

REACH grant and NBH Microgrant (PI: Matt Price); UVM APLE Award (PI: Hannah Ward)

Completed Spring 2017

Laboratory and Ecological Addiction and PTSD Study (LEAPS)

More than a third of people with opioid addiction have comorbid PTSD, which increases disability and relapse. Across two related studies, this project investigated differences in cognitive control as a potential mechanism underlying the impairment associated with comorbid PTSD.

CAS Small Research Grant (PI: Matt Price); Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (PI: Rebecca Mirhashem)

Completed Spring 2015

Mobile Validation of the PCL

On mobile devices, survey items are presented one at a time and cannot be skipped, which may change how people respond. This study evaluated whether and how responses to self-report mental health measures differ between mobile and paper-and-pencil administration.

Research Committee Grant (PI: Matt Price)

Completed Fall 2015

Symptom Tracker Usability Study

A successful mobile intervention must be intuitive. This study evaluated the usability of a mobile application developed at UVM in a sample of undergraduate students, testing whether the app worked properly and was well designed, and measuring satisfaction.

Completed Spring 2015

Self-Compassion to Protect Against PTSD

Self-compassion may protect against psychopathology. This study examined how trauma exposure, trauma severity, and PTSD symptom severity relate to trait self-compassion, with the goal of understanding how self-compassion can improve well-being after a traumatic experience.

UVM APLE Summer Stipend & APLE Award (led by Annie Maheux)
